the dariy, court farm, wookey
This was the conversion of a stone built dairy set within the grounds of the former Bishops Palace of Bath and Wells.
The approved scheme was to retain as much of the existing dilapidated building as possible whilst adding a two storey oak framed extension providing single level accommodation for the clients elderly parents. All groundworks had to be carried out in the presence of an archaeologist as the site was a Scheduled Ancient Monument with the main house dating back to the 12thCentury.
The Dairy had suffered significantly to both water ingress at roof level and structural damage caused by unchecked ivy growth which had made some walls unstable. All stonework was retained and sympathetically repaired where possible along with much of the existing roof structure whilst a breathable internal cocoon was created using specialist membranes and airtight seals at all windows and doors. A combination of insulative materials alongside underfloor heating throughout the entire ground floor ensured that the property was exceptionally energy efficient for a building of this type.
A light and comfortable living space was achieved with full height glazing to the oak framed extension creating a sympathetic award winning conversion.
